Hi Andrea,
By "link-backs" I was referring to the required link on the guestbook pages: "Powered by PHP Guestbook". I didn't know if a corrupt link would cause any of the problems. I did reload the links from the original download (clean). Thank you for your suggestions and assistance. As you can see from the previous post, I got it all ironed out. This software ROCKS!

I'm curious if the comments disappearing is related to the admin/configure page being set at defaults?

I believe I have corrected the problems with my guestbook. As stated earlier, I was having a problem with the page menu generated by the guestbook. The bottom menu wouldn't "sync" with the top one.

I changed my "posts per page" count so that all posts were on one page. This eliminated the generated page menus. I then deleted all page menus from the HTML in the guestbook.html document, and made a backup. I deleted page 2 and 3 of my guestbook, as those posts were now all on the first page. This corrected the page menu issue. I'm sure it happened when I uploaded the backups, and was most likely corrupt or duplicate code on my part.

The reason I could not post was my admin page had been reset to defaults. I re-entered all the data and the guestbook works great.

The issue with the posts disappearing: I discovered that for the last few weeks, the posts would all disappear any time someone tried to post a comment. I discovered this after I uploaded the last backup. It wouldn't let me post either. Maybe it was due to the admin page being reset to defaults during that time? Anyway, after I reset the admin page and got rid of the page menus, all is working flawlessly.

I really like this software. I'm sure my problems were self-inflicted and not the software. I would recommend this simple, customizable guestbook to anyone.

Jon, I am not sure what you mean by "linkbacks". Can you try with the original, unedited software and see if you get the same issues, and then work it from there? From what you say it looks like the script now performs a first step (takes header and footer of the page) but then those are re-assembled without inserting the comments in between. Thank you for going back to the original script and carefully apply your modifications, one by one, until you find out what is causing the bug. Does this make sense?

I also just noticed that when I upload the back up guestbook pages, the comments are visible until I attempt to post a comment. When I post a comment, all comments and supporting html dissappear again.

Posted by Jon ColipOctober 13, 2014 - 08:11 pm
I had made some changes to the link backs (fonts, size, alignment etc. I have copied the original unedited (except for the center alignment) linkbacks back into the guestbook pages and uploaded them to the host. I can't even post a comment after restoring the guestbook with backups. Can you at least verify that my linkbacks meet your requirements?
I tested the software before going live with it, and it worked flawlessly. I have not made any changes except for the linkbacks just now. This is the first time I can't even post a comment, though. My web host is looking at this too. Puzzling.
Thanks,
Jon

Jon, I see now that you say you heavily customized the software. I am entirely unable to control or even know what you did exactly and if by any chance something you did is causing this bug you report. If you heavily modify the software, then you are basically on your own for debugging, please see my point. Never heard that my script will erase posts, and the script have been around for quite a while now.

Posted by AndreaOctober 13, 2014 - 06:54 pm
Jon, the script will not erase the comments. If you open your posts.txt file, are the comments still there? What happens if, after the posts "disappear", you post a new message? Will the comments reappear? Check your posts.txt file for hints about what is going on.
What typically happens is that people will edit the guestbook page, reupload it (without comments), and then complain the posts have disappeared. Apparently this is not your case as the posts disappeared while you were sleeping, if I get it correctly.
Check your posts.txt file and let me know what is inside after "the fact".
Sorry about these problems however honestly, this is the very first time I hear about such a problem. You should double check if the guestbook file has been reuploaded for some reason. And even then, the posts should still be in the posts.txt file. If by any chance this file should turn out to be empty aswell, then there might be something wrong possibly not related to the script.
Let me know.

Greetings,
I posted on Oct.2 that my guestbook keeps deleting the comments and the supporting HTML. It just did it again today between midnite and 6pm. Is anyone else experiencing a similar problem? I have contacted my web host to see if they have any ideas. I really like this software, but if it keeps deleting my comments, I can' use it.

Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this?

Greetings
I am using your wonderful software on my bands website.

http://kyxxrocks.com/guestbook/guestbook.html

I have heavily customized the software, and it passes the W3 4.01 HTML and W# CSS standards using HTML-Kit for editing and verification. I believe I have all of the link-backs intact. I am having two problems:

1. The page navigation (not the horizontal menu at the top) on all 3 pages works, but the page navigation at the bottom of the form does not show the correct page number. (The hyperlink does not show "visited" or "selected". The top works fine.

2. This is a big one. I check the website regularly, just to make sure everything is running smooth. On a few occasions when I check the Guestbook, I find that all of the comments have been removed. Not just the comments, but the supporting HTML is gone too. Is there a requirement that I have violated or not met? I upload the backup of the 3 guestbook pages and all is well for several days. I have not discussed this with my web host yet. I thought I would check here first.
